Plenty of doors are nowhere near a router. A cabin, a garage, a basement flat, a barn conversion, a rental in a stone building with walls the signal will not cross. The advice online assumes a house with full coverage, which is not much help.
The short answer: a fingerprint and keypad lock works completely without Wi-Fi. The lock is not a cloud device with a keypad attached; it is a lock that can optionally talk to a network.
What works with no internet at all
- Fingerprint entry. Templates are stored in the lock. Nothing is checked against a server.
- Keypad codes. Also stored in the lock.
- The mechanical key. Always.
- Adding and removing users. Done at the keypad with the admin code, standing at the door.
- The access log. Recorded in the lock and readable when you next connect, on models that log.
- The doorbell chime. Rings locally on the models with a bell.
What you lose
- Remote codes. You cannot add a code from another city. Someone has to be at the door.
- Doorbell snapshots to your phone. The camera models need a connection to send the image.
- Live notifications. No alert when the door opens.
- Low-battery warnings by app. The lock still beeps and flashes at the door; nobody far away hears it.
For a holiday cabin or a garage, most of that list is theoretical anyway. For a rental you manage from another state, the loss of remote codes is the one that matters, and there is a workaround below.
Running a rental on an offline lock
The method is permanent codes rather than per-guest codes, plus a person on the ground.
Set up a small number of codes that do not change: one for the cleaner, one for the caretaker or neighbour who handles arrivals, one for you. Then either give arriving guests the caretaker’s help, or set a guest code that you change on each turnaround visit rather than each booking.
It is less elegant than remote code generation and it is how most cabins have always worked. What it buys you is a door that never fails because the internet did.
If you want per-booking codes, you need connectivity, and the cheapest route is usually a 4G router or a mobile hotspot at the property rather than a different lock. A basic 4G router at the door costs less than the difference between lock models.
Which model for a no-Wi-Fi door
Choose on features you will actually use, since the app is out of the picture.
Alpha-B, $230.99. Fingerprint, keypad, key. No camera to be unable to send you pictures. The sensible choice for a cabin or garage.
Simplicity, $105.99. Fingerprint and key on a lever handle, with no app at all in the design. For an outbuilding, a store room or an office door.
SP-US23, $364.98. Worth it only if the property might get connectivity later, or if you want the local doorbell chime.
Cold, damp and unheated buildings
A door on an unheated building sees the full temperature range. These locks operate from −10 to 60 °C, and battery life drops in cold weather, sometimes by a third in a hard winter. Change batteries before the cold rather than during it, and keep a set at the property.

Questions
Does the lock need Wi-Fi to set up? No. Admin code, fingerprints and codes are all set at the keypad.
Will it connect later if I add internet? Yes, on the models with Wi-Fi. Nothing is lost by running offline first.
Does Bluetooth work without internet? Where a model has it, yes, over a short range with your phone at the door. It does not replace remote access.
Is an offline lock more secure? It has no remote attack surface, which some people prefer, particularly for a building nobody visits for weeks.
What if I forget the admin code with no app to reset it? Use the mechanical key to get in, then reset the lock at the keypad following the manual. Keep the admin code where you keep your passwords.
