Fingerprint capacity is the specification buyers check last and regret first. A lock that holds twenty prints is fine for a couple and useless for an office with shift workers, a large family, or a landlord running four units off one product line.
Here is what the locks we sell hold, what the models people usually cross-shop hold, and how to work out the number you need.

How many do you actually need?
The arithmetic that matters is not people, it is fingers. Enrol two fingers per person, one from each hand, because the day someone has a cut on a thumb or is carrying shopping in the right arm, the second finger is what opens the door.
| Situation | People | Fingerprints to reserve |
|---|---|---|
| Couple, one door | 2 | 4 |
| Family of five, plus grandparents | 7 | 14 |
| Short-term rental with a cleaning team | 4 to 6 staff | 12, guests use codes |
| Small office, one shift | 15 | 30 |
| Office with shifts and contractors | 40 plus | 80 plus |
| Multi-tenant building, one entrance | Varies by unit count | 2 per resident, plus staff |
Twenty prints covers a household. Fifty covers a large one. Anything with staff turnover, shifts or tenants runs past 100 faster than people expect, because deleted users do not always free their slot cleanly on every lock, and re-enrolments accumulate.
Why 200 matters in the cases where it matters
Three situations genuinely need the headroom.
Staff turnover. An office that hires and loses ten people a year fills a 50-print lock in five years even with tidy administration. Enrolments are quick to add and easy to forget to remove.
Multiple properties on one product line. A landlord with four units wants the same lock on each so there is one app, one manual and one set of spare parts. Capacity per door has to cover tenants plus a cleaner plus a maintenance contact plus the landlord.
Shared entrances. A converted house with six flats and one street door has every resident, their partners and the cleaner on one lock. This is where 20-print locks fail immediately.
If you are a couple with a front door, capacity is not your deciding specification and you should choose on doorbell, price and finish instead.
What else fills up
Keypad codes. Ten codes on the Satella locks. If you run a rental and want a permanent code per cleaner plus one live guest code, ten is comfortable. If you want a unique code for every booking held simultaneously, no lock in this class does that, and you delete as you go.
App users. Separate from prints and codes. Someone with the app can open the door remotely and does not consume a fingerprint slot.
Questions
Does deleting a fingerprint free the slot? On the Satella locks, yes, immediately from the admin menu or the app.
Can two people share one enrolled print? No, and it would not help. Each enrolment is one finger.
Do failed reads count against capacity? No. Only successful enrolments occupy slots.
What if I fill all 200? Delete the enrolments you no longer recognise. Any lock at capacity is a lock with an access list nobody has audited.
Does capacity affect how fast it reads? Not on these sensors. Matching against 200 stored templates is as fast as matching against 20.
Every lock in the top half of the table is in the lock range, ships from Maryland in one to two business days, and carries a one-year warranty. Call 888-400-0607 if you are specifying for an office or a building and want the capacity checked against your headcount.
