Fingerprint Smart Locks for Rentals: A Code Per Guest, No App to Download

A short-term rental has one recurring problem that a lock solves and a lockbox does not: every guest needs a way in, on a day you are not there, and no way in after they leave. A fingerprint lock with a keypad handles both without asking the guest to download anything.

This is how to set one up, what to give each kind of person who needs the door, and the three things that go wrong.

Give the guest a code, not an app

Guests will not install your lock’s app for a three-night stay, and you should not want them to. An app account is one more thing to revoke, and it fails at 11pm when the guest’s phone has no signal in your stairwell.

Send a four-to-eight digit code in the arrival message instead. The guest taps it on the keypad and the door opens. When they check out, you delete that code from your own phone and it stops working. The SP-US23 and Zebulun hold ten codes at once, which is enough for a guest, a cleaner, a handyman, a neighbour and yourself with room spare.

One habit worth building: change the code between guests even when the platform gives you an automated message. A code that worked in March should not work in June.

Give the cleaner a fingerprint

Codes get shared. A fingerprint does not, and it takes half a second at the door with both hands full of linen. Enrol your cleaner, your co-host and anyone else who comes regularly, and leave the codes for guests only.

Every Satella Power lock stores up to 200 fingerprints, so a cleaning team of four with two prints each barely touches the limit. Enrol two fingers per person, one from each hand. The day someone has a cut on a thumb, the other hand still opens the door.

Keep the key, and tell nobody where it is

Every one of these locks ships with a mechanical key, and the key is the answer to the question every host eventually faces at midnight. Do not put it under the mat, and do not give it to the guest. Put it with the neighbour who has your number, or in your own car.

Batteries are the usual reason you would need it. Four AAAs run the SP-US23 for about 182 days, and the app warns you well before they go. If they do die with the door shut, the lock has an external terminal on the outside: touch a USB power bank to it and the keypad wakes up long enough to let you in.

What to check before you buy

Check Why it matters for a rental
Door thickness Satella Power locks fit doors 35 to 65 mm thick. Measure at the edge of the door, not the frame.
Codes stored Ten is comfortable. Fewer than five and you will be deleting codes to make room mid-season.
Wi-Fi range The lock talks to your 2.4 GHz network. If the router is two floors away from the front door, add a plug-in extender in the hall.
Doorbell The SP-US23, Zebulun, SEER and SmartBell send a snapshot when someone rings. Useful when a guest arrives early and wants to drop bags.
Lease terms If you rent the property yourself, check whether your lease allows a lock change. Most allow it if the original lock goes back on at the end.

Which lock for which rental

For a single unit where you want to see who is at the door, the SP-US23 is the one most hosts pick: fingerprint, ten codes, app, key, and a doorbell that photographs the visitor. It is $364.98, or $398.87 for the Ultra with the upgraded camera.

For a room in a shared house, or a door that already has a deadbolt you like, the Alpha-B at $230.99 does fingerprint, code and key without the doorbell.

For an interior door, a storage room or an office inside the property, the Simplicity lever at $105.99 opens on a fingerprint and needs no app at all.

The three things that go wrong

The guest’s finger is wet. Capacitive sensors read the ridges of a fingertip, and a film of water flattens them. Tell guests the code is the backup and put it in the arrival message even when they are enrolled. Drying a hand on a coat solves it most of the time.

The batteries die between guests. Set a calendar reminder every four months to change them, whatever the app says. Batteries cost less than a locksmith.

Nobody wrote down the master code. The admin code is what lets you add and delete everything else. Store it where you store your platform password, not on a note stuck inside the door.

Questions hosts ask

Can I use a smart lock on a property I rent? Usually, if you keep the original lock and refit it when you leave. These locks fit the existing door and existing hole, so the change is reversible in about twenty minutes.

Do guests need Wi-Fi to get in? No. The keypad and the fingerprint sensor work with the lock offline. Wi-Fi is for you: adding codes remotely, seeing who came in, and getting the low-battery warning.

Can I see when a guest arrived? Yes, in the app’s access log, which records which code or fingerprint opened the door and when.

How many locks can I run on one account? As many as you have properties. Each lock appears separately in the app.

Every Satella Power lock carries a one-year warranty, ships from Maryland in one to two business days, and can be paid over time at checkout. Call 888-400-0607 if you want to talk a door through before you order.
